Can Invisalign Fix a Crossbite?

Can Invisalign Fix a Crossbite?

A healthy bite is when your upper and lower teeth align properly when your mouth is closed; if they don’t, it can lead to orthodontic problems such as a crossbite. Crossbites are common in both children and adults and are known to affect the appearance of your smile, chewing function, and overall health.

What Is a Crossbite?

A crossbite occurs when one or more upper teeth sit behind the lower teeth while biting down, instead of slightly overlapping them. This misalignment can happen in the front teeth, the back teeth, or both, or in more severe cases.

There are two main types of crossbite:

Anterior Crossbite

An anterior crossbite occurs when the alignment of the upper front teeth sits behind the lower front teeth when the mouth is closed. It is sometimes mistaken for an underbite, although the causes and severity may differ.

Posterior Crossbite

A posterior crossbite affects the back teeth. This occurs when one or more upper molars or premolars bite inside the lower teeth instead of outside them. Posterior crossbites may occur on one side of the mouth or both sides.

There are several factors associated with why crossbites can develop, including:

  • Genetics and jaw structure
  • Delayed or abnormal tooth eruption
  • Prolonged thumb sucking or pacifier use
  • Mouth breathing
  • Crowding or spacing issues
  • Narrow upper jaw development

If left untreated, crossbites can lead to uneven tooth wear, gum recession, jaw discomfort, headaches, and difficulty chewing properly.

Can Invisalign Correct a Crossbite?

Invisalign is often recommended to correct mild to moderate crossbites. Invisalign uses a collection of clear, custom-made aligners that gradually shift teeth towards better alignment over time. Aligners have become increasingly popular among teens and adults because they offer a removable and discreet orthodontic treatment option.

When correcting a crossbite, Invisalign works by applying controlled pressure to move teeth into their preferred position. It may be recommended that attachments or elastics be used to improve bite correction and jaw alignment.

When Braces or Other Treatments May Be Better

Although Invisalign is effective for many crossbite cases, it may not be the best solution for every patient. Traditional braces or additional orthodontic interventions may be recommended if severe crossbites with significant jaw misalignment or complex tooth movement are present.

Traditional braces may be recommended when:

  • The crossbite is severe or skeletal in nature
  • Significant jaw expansion is needed
  • Teeth require extensive rotation or vertical movement
  • Patient compliance with removable aligners may be difficult

It may be recommended that early intervention treatment be used to guide jaw growth before permanent teeth fully erupt. Treatments may include expanders, braces, or other orthopedic appliances designed to widen the upper jaw and improve bite development.

Why Early Treatment Matters for Children

It is important to identify and monitor developing crossbites in children. Early intervention can often prevent more complex orthodontic concerns and may help reduce the need for more invasive treatment later in life.

Orthodontists often recommend that children receive an evaluation by age seven. It is known that correcting a crossbite early can help guide the proper jaw development, support better facial symmetry, and reduce uneven tooth wear that may damage enamel. Children with untreated crossbites may also experience jaw shifting, chewing difficulties, speech concerns, or discomfort when biting down.

Is Invisalign Right for Your Crossbite?

Crossbites are unique from patient to patient, which is why a professional orthodontic examination is important. During your evaluation, your orthodontist will examine your teeth, bite, jaw alignment, and overall oral health to determine the most effective treatment plan.

Invisalign offers a comfortable and discreet way to correct mild to moderate crossbites while improving bite function and appearance. More complex cases may benefit from traditional braces, expanders, or further treatments to achieve lasting results.

The earlier a crossbite is detected and treated, the easier it is to protect oral health and create a healthier, more balanced smile.
